Early Orthodontic Care: When Should Treatment Begin?

spediatric1At Casey Orthodontics in Warminster, PA, we believe it is never too late to begin orthodontic treatment. But did you know there is an optimal age range to begin orthodontic care that will increase the likelihood of good results and decrease the potential for future problems? The American Association of Orthodontics recommends children receive an initial orthodontic screening at age 7. Dr. Nancy Casey, Dr. Janine R. Trindade and Dr. Daniel Wulc encourage parents to bring their children in for a consultation and examination to establish a personalized treatment plan for each child’s orthodontic needs.

The Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Children and families can benefit from early orthodontic treatment. Our initial examination will help determine the best method for personalized treatment. Every child grows and develops at an individual rate. We will work with them to monitor your child’s growth patterns and begin treatment at the optimal time. Some of the benefits of early orthodontic treatment include:

  • Guiding growth and development
  • Creating room for crowded teeth
  • Reducing the need for tooth removal
  • Predicting changes
  • Preventing serious problems from occurring later
  • Increasing the chance for a healthy, straight smile sooner

Why Choose Early Treatment?

Some orthodontic conditions are much easier to treat if they are caught at a young age. While we prefer to hold initial evaluations at age 7, most orthodontic treatment typically begins between ages 9-14, when all the baby teeth are gone. But some conditions may best be treated with early intervention orthodontic care, including:

  • A severe cross bite
  • Severe crowding
  • Protruding teeth
  • Bad habits (thumb sucking, mouth breathing, tongue thrusting)

At the initial consultation, Dr. Casey, Dr. Trindade and Dr. Wulc can determine the correct treatment plan by monitoring the growth of your child. Once a treatment plan has been established, we will assist your child in achieving an incredible smile much sooner.
